Versioning Reusable Skills Across Teams

How to track, test, and roll back skills so multiple agents stay in sync — semantic versions, integration tests, and changelogs.

Semantic Versioning for Skills

Treat every manifest change as a release. Bump the major version when the trigger description changes, because agents may start or stop using the skill. Use the minor version for new optional behavior, and the patch for bug fixes.

Keep SKILL.md plus its assets in a git repository with version tags. Because skills are directories, a tag captures the entire capability, not just the markdown.

Pro Tip: Test the Trigger

Write an integration test that runs the skill against representative prompts and asserts it fires. Description drift is the number one silent cause of dead skills.

historyInstant Rollback

A failing release is a one-command revert to the previous tag, not a rebuild.

groupsTeam Alignment

A shared registry means every agent in the organization runs the same tested version of a skill.
